People say opposites attract. In my new series, Brits in Manhattan, they certainly do. And my gosh is it fun to write about a hero and heroine who can barely spend two seconds in a room together without taking jibes at each other. But I think the secret actually lies in discovering the things your leading couple do have in common and why, despite their obvious differences, they ultimately fall in love. That’s what my new book, Playing to Win, is all about.
Playing to Win is the second contemporary romantic comedy in the Brits in Manhattan series and can be read as a standalone novel. The hero, Brooks Adams, is a highly sought after personal trainer and gym owner in Manhattan. His life is fairly mundane and he likes it that way. It’s a shame for him that Izzy Coulthard, a British health and fitness blogger, is in New York to promote her new book. Feisty and annoying in equal measure, she is Brooks’s polar opposite and living nightmare.
Brooks likes weight-lifting, eating copious amounts of meat, and watching Monday night football in grungy bars. Izzy, on the other hand, can’t get enough of kale, loves salsa dancing and has an addiction to buying expensive handbags. When a blogging war leads Brooks and Izzy to compete against each other with their respective training and nutrition plans, sparks fly. Only, they are the kind of sparks that lead to fires and cause destruction.
Yet, after being forced together for two weeks, Brooks and Izzy prove that even arch-rivals can find romance. They both like to stay healthy, they love black and white movies, and secretly bop-out to music from the fifties. But their most common trait? They both want to change.
Perhaps with a little bit of Izzy, a pinch of Brooks and a media pressure cooker, Brooks and Izzy will show us all the perfect recipe for a HEA…compromise!

A high-intensity personal trainer
The secret to Brooks’ success as a Manhattan gym owner? Being motivated to disprove everyone who doubted him long ago. He’s not about to let a perky newcomer like Izzy tarnish his reputation. Even if watching her lead a salsa class on his premises is fuel for some very unprofessional fantasies . . .
His beautiful British rival
Every time Izzy slams Brooks in her fitness blog, her book sales soar. But when their escalating media feud forces them to be up-close-and-personal for two weeks, she realizes there’s much more to Brooks than that incredible body.
And a competition that’s got their hearts racing…
Soon Izzy and Brooks are finding all kinds of creative ways to work up a sweat. A passionate workout is easy, but can their rivalry give way to a lasting partnership?
