Beware the Niviane Idesha (Jan 11, 2009)
Reviewer: Metonia USA
For days, I have been trying to discover the difference between a regular romance and an erotic romance and Devyn Quinn’s EMBRACING MIDNIGHT gave me the answer. Erotica comes with its own WARNING LABEL “This is a REALLY HOT book. (Sexually Explicit).” Well, for a virgin reader of Erotica how could I let my imagination pass this temptation up? The answer is I could not.
Callie (Caroline) Whitten aka Calista, is on the trail of a killer. Undercover for the FBI using the alias Calista, Callie is sexually drawn to the dark side of her quarry, but not in her wildest dreams, or nightmares, did she comprehend that what she was chasing was a species out of history’s legends and truly alien to the known world.
Iollan Drake was human once but an alien species known as the Niviane Idesha transformed him into what the world calls vampire. Sustained by sexually charged blood, Drake is drawn to Callie’s own dark secrets but he is not alone. Ex-lover and Callie’s boss, Roger Reinke has ideas of his own and is jealous when their Director in Charge Samuel Faber gives the green light for Callie to use her sexual attraction for Drake to capture him for study.
Drake is a new sire for his species and eventually recognizes Callie as his mate, but how can sworn enemies survive? Drake has already started to expand his cluster and at first wants to share Callie’s sexually charged energy with his brothers, and does so in a stimulating encounter. The meaning of Erotica became very clear to me in this encounter; not the usual romance scene but very different indeed for this reviewer. If your tastes are for the typical male-female ratio then this book may not be for you for typical does not exist in this book.
Quoted from the book: “ Slow down brothers. Take it easy and let her get used to the idea there will be three men to serve her pleasure tonight…. Tonight we will please you in every way.”
Wow, reading that passage sent my imagination, and my comfort zone soaring into wild possibilities. Because this was my very first Erotica I decided not to immediately jump into writing this review, unlike my reading of the book. I must admit, my first desire was to jump into the middle and find those scenes other reviews of the Erotica genre kept hinting at and teasing me with and man did I do just that. BAM, right off I am thrown into a scene I was unprepared to handle, but being the tenacious person that I am, I wrapped my arms around myself and continued to read. My comfort zone had definitely been assaulted and I quickly understood why this book had the designation of a “dark gothic erotica” but my interest had been captured and I continued to read, only this time starting at the beginning.
My first impressions by the time I had completed this book was that it read like an Erotic science fiction, similar to a favorite television series with all the references to aliens and symbionts. Being a big sci-fi fan this was not a bad thing, just something I had not expected. The story is expressed mainly through Callie’s point of view with her feelings and insights. Very little of the story is articulated from Drakes viewpoint but this does not seem to detract from the overall story. Both main characters came across as strong, determined individuals most of the time.
The secondary characters may have played small rolls but the impact to the story was dramatic and necessary. The brothers, Troyn and Cadyn are two very hot vampires I would definitely liked to have found out more about. Paul Norton is Callie’s partner, also undercover, and although not an alpha, he has his own sort of little boy lost appeal. And of course every good story of this type has to have a villain and besides the ex, Doctor Akemi Yaun definitely fits this part well. She was definitely one of my favorite characters to detest.
The language for the most part was not nearly as offensive as I had first feared but it did stretch past my novice comfort zone very quickly. The book read easily. My impressions are that Devyn Quinn knew what she was doing, to entice the reader to continue reading. There is enough left unexplained in this book, that a second book would most likely be welcomed.
It has taken me a few days to digest my feelings regarding my first erotica read and I must say, the genre has a certain appeal. Devyn Quinn’s EMBRACING MIDNIGHT did not overwhelm me with mindless sex and senseless orgies but smoothly and intriguingly initiated me into the world with my first taste of dark gothic erotic romance.
