Staff Pick & Review by Michaela H.
Hi! I couldn’t resist this chance to rave about a book we’re releasing next month, DERANGED by Jacob Stone. Full disclosure: I am this book’s editor, so admittedly, I am far from objective about it. In fact, I really love it!
Here’s a not-so-secret bit of insider information: Jacob Stone is a new byline chosen by acclaimed suspense writer Dave Zeltserman for a new series he is writing for Lyrical Underground. After winning many an award and rave review, Dave decided to go in a new direction with a series about a cop who specializes in serial-killer cases. The purpose of the Jacob Stone byline is not to hide Dave’s identity; just to let his fans know he’s launching a new kind of series.
The series protagonist is Morris Brick, a retired LAPD detective who’s set up his own shop, but still takes on cases for his ex-bosses when they need his special skills. DERANGED pits Brick against the Skull Cracker Killer, SCK (pronounced “SICK”) – and this murderer is about as psycho as it gets. If you’re a fan of thrillers by Michael Connelly, John Lutz, John Sandford, and other masters, you’ll have a lot of fun with DERANGED.
Best of all, you can look forward to future books in the Morris Brick series, coming from Lyrical Underground. Watch for CRAZED in September 2017 and MALICIOUS in March 2018. And more to come
“A fascinating and exciting blend of misdirection, topsy-turvy, and violence.”

“A dark and different serial killer novel that will haunt the reader long after the book is closed.”
“Los Angeles has seldom seen such grisly fun. It’s James Ellroy meets Alfred Hitchcock on the psychotic side of the street.”
“One of the most compelling, thrilling, and truth be told, at times look-away-from-page-frightening serial killer novels I've read in a long, long time.”
Introducing L.A. investigator Morris Brick, a former homicide cop on the trail of a murderous psychopath who gives a terrifying new meaning to the word DERANGED . . .
They call him the Skull Cracker Killer. He drugs his victims. Breaks open their skulls with a hammer and chisel. The rest is inhuman.
Five years ago he terrorized New York City, claiming twelve victims before the killing stopped. Now he’s racking up victims on a fresh hunting ground. Where former LAPD homicide detective Morris Brick is working as a consultant on a serial-killer film. Where a desperate mayor pleads with Brick to take on the case. And where the only way he can stop the next wave of murders is by outsmarting a madman—before he strikes again, this time much too close to home . . .
