“A taut and haunting story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.” —Jeff Lindsay, creator of the DEXTER series

For Cleveland forensic investigator Maggie Gardiner, dead bodies are part of the job. It’s the mind of a killer that keeps her awake at night . . .

When Maggie Gardiner notices a connection between the battered body of a young girl left in a cemetery and a career criminal shot in an alley, she must follow a trail no one else wants to see, picking up crumbs of evidence that no one else notices.

Jack Renner is accustomed to being the hunter, not the hunted. He kills to make the world a safer place—even if that makes it a more dangerous one for Maggie. He will not let her stop him.

One body at a time, Maggie circles in on a killer. But it’s what she find inside herself that will bring the terrible truth to light . . .

“Lisa Black always delivers authentic characters in riveting stories. That Darkness takes things to a spellbinding new level with a taut and haunting story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.” --Jeff Lindsay, creator of Dexter

“Intriguing forensic details help drive the plot to its satisfying conclusion.” --Publishers Weekly

“Black is one of the best writers of the world of forensics, and her latest introduces Maggie Gardiner, who works for the Cleveland Police Department. Her relentless pursuit of answers in a dark world of violence is both inspiring and riveting. Readers who enjoy insight into a world from an expert in the field should look no further than Black. Although Cornwell is better known, Black deserves more attention for her skillful writing – and hopefully this will be her breakout book.” – RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

“The surprising ending is sure to keep readers coming back for more.” --Booklist

"Black, a former forensics investigator, skillfully portrays the stark realities of homicide cases in her latest thriller (after Close to the Bone). In this series launch, she pairs Maggie with Jack Renner, a determined detective with secrets of his own who has no intention of allowing murderers to evade their punishment. A great choice for readers of psychological suspense, forensic investigations, and mystery."— Library Journal

“A crime thriller with a sharp psychological edge running through it. . . .That Darkness left me thinking for days about the intricacies of the plot, the beauty of Lisa Black’s writing, and the profound relationship between law and justice. Lisa Black, through her incredible characters and narration, shows the delicate balance between the two and how hard it is to know which side is the right one. With That Darkness, Lisa Black has written a book that everyone should read. But if you are a lover of mystery and suspense, this is an absolute must read.” --Suspense Magazine
