Staff Pick and Review by Morgan E.

When I saw the cover of LONE WOLF I instantly found myself falling in love with it because of the Labrador! This really isn’t like any mystery on the market, it’s a detective duo story of sorts – but one of the duo happens to be a canine.

The authors (Sara Driscoll is the penname for the talented writing team of Jen J. Danna and Ann Vanderlann) really know their stuff too, and you gain so much information about search and rescue dogs and the connections they have with their handlers. At the top of each chapter they even include search and rescue vocab words, which was enjoyable and helpful. I sometimes find myself googling a phrase if I hadn’t heard or read it before, and having words from the search and rescue world defined for me as I progressed through the story was an unexpected bonus.

This isn’t a cozy mystery, so there is a harder edge to the investigation. There is a bombing suspect on the run, setting off explosions down the East Coast. Meg and Hawk are first sent as first responders to the attack locations, their role escalates to help track down the suspect before it’s too late.

The backstory between Meg and Hawk had me holding back tears as I read it, I have a chocolate Labrador and she reminded me so much of Hawk. It also sets up the relationship between the two characters extremely well, and I cannot wait to see how it progresses as the series moves along. This is the first book in the F.B.I. K-9 series, and it sets up the world in a way that leaves you wanting to read more. Especially if you are a dog lover.

In the first book in a thrilling new series, FBI Special Agent Meg Jennings and Hawk, her loyal search-and-rescue Labrador, must race against time as they zero in on one of the deadliest killers in the country . . .

Meg and Hawk are part of the FBI’s elite K-9 unit. Hawk can sniff out bodies anywhere—living or dead—whether it’s tracking a criminal or finding a missing person. When a bomb rips apart a government building on the National Mall in Washington D.C., it takes all of the team’s extensive search-and-rescue training to locate and save the workers and visitors buried beneath the rubble.

But even as the duo are hailed as heroes, a mad bomber remains at large, striking terror across the Eastern seaboard in a ruthless pursuit of retribution. As more bombs are detonated and the body count escalates, Meg and Hawk are brought in to a task force dedicated to stopping the unseen killer. But when the attacks spiral wide and any number of locations could be the next target, it will come down to a battle of wits and survival skills between Meg, Hawk, and the bomber they’re tracking to rescue a nation from the brink of chaos.

Time was ticking since the blast and the longer victims were lost, the less chance there was of saving them. Craig had told her more than an hour ago to go home, but she needed to be here. Needed to find the missing.

Focus on the ones you haven’t found yet. They’re depending on you.
Meg pushed purposefully to her feet. “Hawk, find them.”
He immediately put his nose down and resumed searching for a scent trail.

Advance Praise for Lone Wolf
