Q&A with Roxanne Smith

What brings you the greatest joy?

It's the cliché answer, but I love hanging out with my family. My kids are awesome, hilarious little people.

What makes you smile?

My kids, cute animals, and good jokes.

What quote do you live by?

"Bloom where you are planted." I'm sensitive to my surroundings so this has meant a lot to me at times.

What is your greatest indulgence?

Dessert. I can turn down a doughnut for breakfast, but I'm powerless against cheesecake after dinner.

What makes you laugh?

Satire! Love Saturday Night Live. Also, a big fan of sarcasm.

What is most satisfying?

The sun shining, and flip-flops on my feet.

What is on your nightstand?

Lamp, stack of books, mason jar of nail files and pens, post-it notes, and loose change.

What makes you cry?

Sappy movie endings usually get me.

What is your pet peeve?

People who take advantage/are ungrateful

What talents do you wish you had?

I always desperately wanted to sing, but the talent didn't manifest with the desire, unfortunately...

What is your most irrational fear?

Sharks. Regardless of the body of water, I'm convinced Jaws lives everywhere.

Who would you most like to have dinner with?

The list of fictional characters is much longer than the list of actual people. But if I had to go with non-fictional, Stephen King is right at the top of my list. (Harry Potter is next.)

Who do you envy?

People who are better at letting loose than I am.

What author had a profound effect on you?

Susan Elizabeth Phillips in regards to romance, but Stephen King in regards to the craft.

What do you wish you'd known when you were younger?

That my parents were right about damn near everything.

What is the best compliment you ever received?

Someone once told me I look like Kirsten Dunst, and that's not so bad.

What surprises people most, once they get to know you?

Since I've outgrown my shyness, I'm not really sure! I kind of put it all out there.

Do you believe in writer's block?

I hate to say no then experience it. If an idea isn't working for me, I backtrack until I find the groove it follows most naturally. Stories want to be told, after all.

Did you always want to be a writer?

I always wrote, but it didn't occur to me to try it seriously until my mother's offhand comment that she always assumed I'd be a writer.

What piece of advice would you give aspiring writers?

DON'T GIVE UP! It's been ten years since my mom's fate-changing words. I stuttered and paused in places, but I never quit believing I'd make it.

Quinn decides to spend one year in London writing a historical romance inspired by him. Until real life butts in…

Jack’s jealous ex-fiancée sparks a media storm when she accuses him and Quinn of having an affair. But Jack knows how to play this game. At his insistence, Quinn agrees to go along with the faux romance until the chatter subsides. Then they’ll stage a quiet breakup and go their separate ways.
