Who better than food and cocktails columnist Hayley Powell to book a caterer for the Island Times holiday party? But Hayley's quest for a cook turns into the pursuit of a killer who caters to no one. . .

Office Christmas parties can sometimes mean career suicide--but they rarely lead to murder. Hayley thought Garth Rawlings would be the perfect caterer for this year's bash, but when the gourmet sees her budget, he goes galloping.

Unfortunately his run is short-lived. Garth is found dead on the floor of his kitchen, with his delectable creations burning in the oven. Faced with a spread of suspects, Hayley is determined to discover who would want to take out the Christmas caterer, because--no matter what the season--justice must be served. . .

Includes seven delectable recipes from Hayley's kitchen!

“Catered to Death” (Monday, December 15, 2014)
Reviewer: Nancy Narma

In this fifth Hayley Powell Mystery, we travel back to Bar Harbor, Maine at Christmastime. Hayley is the Food and Cocktail Columnist for the “Island Times” newspaper. She has much on her plate dealing with her self-centered ex-husband Danny, the chaotic whirlwind schedules and demands of her two children, Gemma and Dustin, never-ending headache produced by her job and, last but not least, her love life. Her Boss, Sal, hints at the possibility of a promotion to Sr. Office Manager, but the sparkling offer does not come without strings—namely, an office Christmas Party with all of the trimmings within a budget of $100.00! Seemingly impossible, she contacts Chef Garth Rawlings who creates an unbelievably yummy sounding menu with a “No-Can- Do” price tag. Deflated, Hayley decides to cook up the spread herself, with amazing results and mountains of kudos. After reading the glowing tweets about Hayley’s culinary delights, Chef Rawlings decides to put his snit aside and hire her to help him with dishes for the annual “Midnight Madness” event. When she tries to deliver the goodies to Garth’s warehouse/kitchen at the appointed hour, she finds the door locked, a smell of smoke and no response to her rapping. Captain Kendrick and Police Chief Alvares are on the scene quickly, only to find food burning in the oven and Chef Garth’s lifeless body on the floor. Did his quick temper lead to a heart attack? Would severe trauma and bruising go along with such a diagnosis? Who would want this award-winning chef dead? The long list of suspects seem to include his ex-business partner, Ken Massey, his “not-as-lady-like-as-she-seems” wife, Tiffany and his mistress, Connie Sparks, as well as an eyeball on Hayley herself. She has to clear her good name, but how? By putting her exemplary sleuthing skills to work, that’s how! Complications arise, both with the case and her love life, when she realizes ex-boyfriend, hunky Lex Bansfield uses the other half of the warehouse for his new contracting business. Her heart has been completely captivated by handsome, romantic Veterinarian, Dr. Aaron Palmer—Will working on the case give off the wrong vibes to both men? What could “Casper Milquetoast” Hugo possibly know? Even though this Hayley Powell Mystery can stand on its own, I strongly suggest you read the other 4 (“Death of a Country-fried Redneck”, “Death of a Kitchen Diva”, “Death of a Coupon Clipper”, and “Death of a Chocoholic”). You’ll become addicted to the wild predicaments she gets herself into, the colorful characters who inhabit her world, drool over the tempting recipes that the talented team of Authors have graciously included within and be looking forward to the next Hayley Powell cozy, “Death of a Cupcake Queen” due out in the Spring of 2015. Cozy lovers, be sure to make room next to that mug of eggnog for this one!
