This summer has been warmer than usual in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and Hannah Swensen is trying to beat the heat both in and out of her bakery kitchen. But she’s about to find out the hard way that nothing cools off a hot summer day like cold-blooded murder…

It’s a hot, muggy evening, and the last thing Hannah wants to do is squeeze into a pair of pantyhose for the Grand Opening of the refurbished Albion Hotel. But with Hannah’s famous Red Velvet cupcakes being served in the hotel’s new Red Velvet lounge, she can’t bring herself to back out.

The party starts off with a bang with the unexpected arrival of Doctor Bev, a Lake Eden legend who left town in shame after she two-timed her fiancé one too many times. Bev’s splashy appearance on the arm of a wealthy investor is the talk of the night. But the gossip comes to a screeching halt when a partygoer takes a mysterious dive off the hotel’s rooftop garden.

The victim is the sheriff’s secretary, Barbara Donnelly, and she is barely clinging to life. The question is, did she fall—or was she pushed? As the police investigate, the only one who isn’t preoccupied with the case is Doctor Bev. She’s too busy trying to stir things up with her old flame Norman, who’s reunited with Hannah.

Just as Hannah’s patience with Bev runs dangerously thin, her rival is found dead at the bottom of Miller’s Pond. The only clue the police have is the Red Velvet cupcake Bev ate right before she died—and the tranquilizers someone seems to have baked into it. To everyone’s shock, Hannah is now the unlikely target of a murder investigation—and she’s feeling the heat in a way she never has before…

About Joanne Fluke:

Like Hannah Swensen, Joanne Fluke grew up in a small town in rural Minnesota where her neighbors were friendly, the winters were fierce, and the biggest scandal was the spotting of unidentified male undergarments on a young widow’s clothesline. She insists that there really are 10,000 lakes and the mosquito is NOT the state bird.

While pursuing her writing career, Joanne has worked as: a public school teacher, a psychologist, a musician, a private detective’s assistant, a corporate, legal, and pharmaceutical secretary, a short order cook, a florist’s assistant, a caterer and party planner, a computer consultant on a now-defunct operating system, a production assistant on a TV quiz show, half of a screenwriting team with her husband, and a mother, wife, and homemaker.

She now lives in Southern California with her husband, her kids, his kids, their three dogs, one elderly tabby, and several noisy rats in the attic.

RED VELVET CUPCAKE MURDER.... (Thursday, October 03, 2013)
Reviewer: AprilR,My Book Addiction and More

RED VELVET CUPCAKE MURDER by Joanne Fluke is an interesting Mystery set in Lake Eden, Minnesota. #16 in the "Hannah Swensen Mystery with Recipes" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Filled with lively debates, mystery, and drama. While, I have not read all of this series, I believe you can only take a character so far before it is time to move on to another chapter in their life, this is the way of Hannah Swensen. Although, it is well worth the time and expense for the delicious recipes at the end of each chapter. If you enjoy a cozy mystery, than you will enjoy this story. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

“A Cozy Filled With Mystery, Murder and Surprises” (Monday, June 10, 2013)
Reviewer: Nancy Narma

If you enjoyed Ms. Fluke’s “Cinnamon Roll Murder”, you’re going to be over-the-top thrilled with this action-packed volume. Lake Eden is all abuzz with excitement as the Grand Opening of the poshly- renovated Albion Hotel is about to begin—complete with eye-popping condos and a jaw-dropping, bank account draining penthouse fit for a king, complete with a domed tropical rooftop garden and
breathtaking view. Owner, Roger Dalworth (From the “Cities”) spared no expense in creating the high-priced, elegant housing and asked Andrea to handle the Real Estate listings and sales, of which she gladly agreed. However, Roger brought an “Ill Wind” to Lake Eden along with his business plans—in the person of the much detested Dr. Bev, who is his Fiancée. She wastes no time flirting with every male in Lake Eden, Norman included! Will Norman fall victim to her wiles again? And when she’s not flirting, she’s her old nasty self to everyone, especially Hannah. “The Cookie Jar” has created the scrumptious, surprise-filled Red Velvet Cupcakes for the festive gathering, and while the crowd mingles, but before they can enjoy the delicious offerings, Sheriff Bill Todd’s Secretary, Barbara Donnelly falls from the lavish, but unfinished penthouse garden terrace. Was this an accident? Or was the plunge at the hands of another? Adding to Mike Kingston’s case load is the unsolved, untimely death of Clayton Wallace, devoted bus driver for the “Cinnamon Roll Six Jazz Band” whose passing was first considered a murder, and now a suicide. But was it?? And if it is, the insurance company will not honor his policy and pay the much-needed funds to his ill son. Hannah dons her sleuthing cap once more with assistance from Lisa, Andrea, Michelle, Hannah’s Mother Delores, Norman, Doc, her beloved fat-cat Moishe and reluctantly, her sometimes boyfriend wanna-be Mike Kingston. There are other surprises in store that I will not divulge..I’lll just say we’ve waited a long time— and you’ll sigh, boo, hiss, get disgusted, shake your head in disbelief and cheer more than once. Hannah, Lisa and friends share 26 yummy recipes, with everything from mouth-watering appetizers and comforting main dishes to decadent desserts. There are many twists and turns within this mixed bag of mystery that you don’t want to miss. The most difficult part of this book is getting to the last page and having to wait for Hannah’s next adventure. Be sure you add this volume to your TBR list— you will not be disappointed! What A Delightful Read! (Monday, May 20, 2013)
Reviewer: Judy Burgi

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There's a bit of romance, lots of humor, and plenty of mystery! Hannah Swensen is the main character in this good read and her character fits her name. She is such a delight. Not only can she bake a mean cupcake, she is a great mystery solver.

This is the first book of Author Joanne Fluke that I have read. I really didn't know what to expect. I was thrilled that this was a good clean book to read. One that I can pass on to one of my friends and not be embarrassed. I can't wait to read more books written by this author.

I received an ARC copy that included many recipes. I am looking forward to trying most of them out. I do think Easy Fruit Pie, Chocolate Covered Peanut Cookies and Three-Way Brownie Cookies might turn out to be my favorites.

I received this ARC copy from Kensington Publishing to read and give an honest review. All opinions in this review are mine alone.
